Hi
To support the views about Steel Guitars and prevent other couples from following our mistake. We would like to share our terrible experience here.
We are newly weds and had a beautiful wedding reception followed by dinnar at the E&O hotel.
The only thing most disappointing was Steel Guitar. For lack of better words, they are terrible and unprofessional. Unless you really have to, please dont use them and I wont recommend to my friends
While we were doing the Yum Seng, my eldest brother was leading the Yum Seng according to a Plan that we had spent lot of time doing and perfecting for our wedding. One of my best man was the designated Emcee for the night, but Richard tried to "take over" his role and reminded him that he has been doing this for the past 20 years so he knows what he is doing...not!!
The shocker was that Richard, the band leader, decided to cut my brother off in the middle of Yum Seng with his "improvisation"!! We were so embarrassed and felt victimised to play along since both families were on stage and we did not want to show any displeasure!!
On top of that, they did not deliver what was promised for the event. We paid 3500 RM for them to provide co-ordination, 3 strollers for the reception and a 7 piece band. However, the strollers were late for the wedding reception, and only one out of the three got there after the reception ended, the female singer for the band was not the person we saw at the rehearsal but a different girl and some guests commented she look and dress like their indonesian maids!! To top it off , her singing was mediocre and far from the one we saw and we were not informed of the change but knew only that night!
The band was not 7 piece as promised but more like 4 piece band and we paid extra to get the extra band members but didnt get them on the actual day.
Richard said he would go through the band sequence with us before hand but he was not contactable for the 3 days leading to our wedding!! The only call was a 5 min call that they would appear on the actual day at 3pm and go through there. I told him would that be too close to call but he was cocky and said he knew what was doing and we were in good hands.!! We were not in good hands and for that matter, he was not there at 3pm as said but only his technical guys! Richard was not seen at the scene till 6pm and by that time, we had no time to go through the sequance with him. Richard then had the gall to ask us to cover the band member dinner when it was never discussed before hand. We said No for the above reasons.
Thankfully , we only requested them to play the music for the second music "let there be love" since the first walk in was a CD.
Richard may think he knows alot but the band didnt play a classic song like "Let there be love" well. In fact, i suspect Richard didnt remember all the words to the song!
I actually sat down with Richard and gave him our feedback. I told him this event could be just another gig for the band but he has to remember its also someone wedding and most people would want a perfect wedding in their lifetime. Besides, people that he had offended through his insensitive or unprofessional conduct would not ever see him again but reminded these people are our family, relatives and friends whom we will see for the rest of our lives and bad impressions last a very long time.
I also told him he was uncontactable and even his office line didnt had anyone to pick up the phone! I said if we had met earlier and clarified our expectations, things might turn out differently. The fact he was uncontactable gave us unnecessary stress and concerns that we really didnt need since we had other priorities to manage.
In Sum, DONT USE STEEL GUITAR. Richard has lost alot of potential customer from his poor performace at our wedding since we have many friends who we going to get married soon and my wife has 2 soon to be married sisters.
We actually took the time to check out a number of bands like Chakora and Steel Guitar. Eddy Band was not what we wanted but for what we paid for, Steel Guitar was totally not worth its while. Richard would boast about his experiences and even tell " if you not happy with our performance that night you can choose to not pay us" but after all our experience that night, we both decided to be good samaritans and pay them even though internally we really didnt want to.
We hope our experience will prevent future couples from falling into the "marketing BS" from Steel Guitar and Richard. If you DO use them for lack of better options in Penang, put everything down that you want in Black and While especially the female lead singer or singers that was promised to you and no dinner or extras on that actual day for the band!

STEEL GUITARS Review (January 2008):
I am looking at wedding bands for my Penang wedding to be held in December and I have came across numerous negative accounts of the band STEEL GUITARS.
I have heard first hand accounts from my dear friend who had STEEL GUITARS at their wedding in December that the band was very unprofessional. The band was rude to the couple and their friends as well as insensitive over particular needs the couple had outlined. Timeline to the night's event was not followed, instead the band decided to "improvise" and dishonor the couple's wishes on how the night should be. The bride and groom was put on the spot as "amusement" in their own wedding reception because the band claimed they saw need to "liven" things up. To top that off, the singer(s) was a disappointment from the choice of songs that did not concur with the couple's request of a classic jazz composition.
Every wedding couple plans to have their special, tailored wedding reception – looking at details from the invitations to the reception event's music, etc. STEEL GUITARS would not be the band for you seeing that their M.O. (modus operandi) is to perform "their very own concert".
Another account I received was from my parents. They had recently attended a friend's wedding where STEEL GUITARS were the entertainment of the evening. My parents together with their friends reported to me that the band's performance was outright pathetic. The vocal from the band was nothing to shout; in fact they were down right awful - amateurish. The tone of the evening as delivered by the band was nothing close to classy and/or elegant but tacky.
My dear friend wrote to the band voicing her disappointment with their performance and was presented with a very non-apologetically response. According to the band, and I quote:
" As far as Steel Guitars Concept Entertainers is concern, the band leader is there, the function is successful and we don't look into details. That's how Steel Guitars handle function - the impromptu /emotional zone/atmosphere and that's what make Steel Guitars famous internationally. That is our service to our clients." – STEEL GUITARS (January '08)
STEEL GUITARS does NOT LOOK INTO DETAILS!! Please let this be a warning for couples who are searching for bands. If you have decided to go with STEEL GUITARS or have booked their services, I suggest a black and white contract with all YOUR specifications to ensure no "surprises" on your night's event. The contract should also specify and include what happens if the band decided to break the terms as outlined on the contract.
Dan, I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU ON RICHARD and STEEL GUITAR! I should have joined this forum earlier. I hired them thinking that I can leave the rest of the night for them to create the environment but I was really dissapointed. Firstly, Richard promised to provide confetti machine when I enter the hall and of course it didnt happened. I asked for only 3 piece band....I chose the singers accordingly and I also chose all my songs that I want them to sing. The singers i chose was Heidi (main singer), Winnie(MC, 2nd singer) and a pianist. In the end i had one guitarist which i dont want because my banquet hall is rather medium and the sound of the guitar is too much for my guests. Then another pianist and the only one Heidi that I chose turn up. The pianist and guitarist RICHARD arranged for me are part timers. They are all not in sync with the singer at all.
There were a few songs which they played then suddenly stopped. what are they doing?rehersing in my wedding???? this is once a lifetime event and they have ruined such a beautiful night!!
On top of all that, Steven Yeoh the MC runs to 2 functions in the same hotel. Can u imagine that? Now u see him and now you dont!! Worst case, at the opening Steven sang the chinese sad song. My husband and I was so angry that during our 2nd entrance we actually told steven we are not going to pay STEEL GUITAR. None of the things we wanted was delivered.
During my cake cutting, they also promised bubble machines...again it didnt happen. Throughout the night, the music was too loud for my guests and only heidi was singing. Since she is a philipino, she cant sing good chinese songs. So my relatives didnt really enjoy that night. Before my wedding, I visited the singers 3 times to get the event sorted out and chose my songs accordingly. If I knew they were like tat, for the money i paid I could have hired Chakora.
After my wedding, I told Richard that I want to give feedback. And you know what - please read the following SMS from Richard, the owner of Steel Guitar :
I think you are sick. U r gila n mad. Will ask musicians 2 talk 2 u at yr home or office. I close myself 2 u.
See ... he liase with us all the time, but after the event he refuses to talk to me or my husband. What kind of attitude is that???
As a conclusion, I will NEVER recommend STEEL GUITAR to anyone!
wahh..... hello all steel guitar victims... i feel so bad for u girls but i gotta thank u all for reviews! luckily, i was reading this forum prior to booking any band. someone recommended (the hotel lady) steel guitar n when i saw it i wanted to faint. i read the reviews then only i received the suggestions.
but one thing with jason, he claimed he is bilingual, is he really good as a MC? i actually contacted him for a sound system hire + him as a MC. he quoted to me but then, so confusing! didn't know what he meant! if anyone has a quote, please PM me. i need to ask jason (trinity) to get sound system n MC plus MAYBE wedding decoration.
Hi there....
Try chakora band, my friend which had his wedding same as mine hired them and he has no regrets. Pity me...stuck with that sick STEEL GUITAR and wasted our money to hire. And mind you they are not cheap at all!

Hi lovelove,
i went to a wedding reception at G hotel early this year. frankly the ambience is great. you pay mainly for the ambience as the food is lousy. it is not tasty at all and the fish, prawns are not fresh. What else do you want to know?
Hi CSY,
Thank you very much for responding. Good to know the ambience is great. What about service? And deco?
Hi lovelove,
Service is normal...deco is good. alternatively you can hire your own decorator to deco the place according to your needs and they give you some price off the total charges.

i wished i saw this thread earlier. me n my fh were looking for a restaurant or hotel to hold our banquet in dec 08. we have very limited choice as they are gonna have like 80-90 tables!!!! i'm not fr penang so i don't know where to look.everything depends on my fh n FIL. so they finally booked Wonderland restaurant on the 11th floor of komtar.the 59th floor although it has a nice view but we were guessing when the lights are all turned on,the view will be lost.plus the placing of the tables in the restaurant looks not strategic. i wanted hotels as i feel it'll be more grand. but too bad....so many tables, most hotels can't accommodate, right? or are there hotels which can fit so many and has quite good food???? anyone got comments on wonderland restaurant??? the outside looks ugly.
Maybe u can look for Equatorial hotel? My fren aso facing such problem as her wedding dinner is more than 100 tables as the ballroom is enuf for more than 70 tables...
hi babylove, EQ is too expensive for our budget lor.abt 800+++ per table.
Maybe golden ebay restaurant? My bro wil hv his wedding dinner thr and the whole restaurant(ground floor and 2nd floor) estimate can fit in around 70-80 tables as my bro told me.mayb u can check it out ur own http://www.oomph.com.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=674&Itemid=35 Golden ebay outlook quite class and new and the price is average too, rm300-400 per table and if more than 30 tables, they will provide juice and more.... between crc restaurant aso not bad...a lot of my fren tel me the food at crc is tasty and the price aso average ....
Wonderland food is not good at all..but since you have booked, nothing much can be done. CRC restaurant or Jade palace is a good location for wedding dinner.

Hi there ladies
Anyone has ideas and recommendations to share for a one-week trip to Chiangmai, THailand? Hubby and I are planning our honeymoon there next month and would like a free and easy trip. We would also appreciate tips on nice places to stay, somewhere we can enjoy staying in, read, eat, sleep...
Thanks in advance!!
Hi amyliq,
1 week is too long in chiang mai. you can combine bangkok and chiang mai. It is cool there if u go end of the year till around feb. book your tickets via air asia and then go online to book the local tours. you pay via credit card and print out the vouchers...the tour bus will come pick you from your hotel. If you need the online tours www. let me know.

I actually started getting all those symptoms as early as the first two weeks but mistook it for PMS. I only took the symptoms as a possibility of pregnancy in Week 3 (the week I was supposed to get my period) and because I have a history of irregular periods as a result of stress, I decided to wait another two weeks before I took the test.
Usually people and doctors recommend that you take a test if you have missed your period for a few days - the earlier you test, the more faint the line will be. I'd say that a nice window is around five days to one week.
Meiteoh,
yes i agree with you. also get the good pregnancy tests, cost around rm20. you can see the lines clearer and faster.

hi, i am new here, plan to hv dinner at penang island hotel...any suggestion?can tel me the quatation for each hotel?thanks
hey ladies...
first i would like to thank rosayee for the info of the butterworth restaurants' contact. anyhow, my mom kinda decided to have it in the newly opened restaurant in seberang jaya (i dunno whats the name tho). but it doesnt matter ler.
while for my penang reception, ive got quotations from e&o, g hotel, parkroyal, dorsett, evergreen and northam. im still waiting for quotations from 32@mansion, 68 kelawai, rasa sayang, golden sands and also traders. anyone who is interested let me know. ok? do email me on ling_rei@hotmail.com or PM me.
however, theres a summary of what i've got:
e&o's a bit harsh - buffet: rm 120++ per person, buffet: rm120++ per person chinese 8 course: RM 1388++ per table, rm788++, rm988++ if you require the use of ballroom (more than 150 ppl but less than 300 ppl, RM8000++ will be charged for using the ballroom) its like getting yr head chopped off using a samurai knife i guess.
g hotel's: www.g-hotel.com.my its exactly the same as it features on the website: rm688++ up to rm1388++ per table...
parkroyal can accommodate very small to very big parties: going like rm588++ and rm688 onwards.
dorsett: starts from rm688 NETT... no BS charges on top of it.. and another package at rm888 NETT minimum 150 ppl, max 220 ppl.
evergreen: rm568++ and rm728++ {very good menu n price to pay for that kind of menu} minimum of 250 ppl or else they charge u extra!!
northam: rm688 NETT and rm788 NETT and menus is not too bad as well. minimum 150 person and maximum 230 ppl.
the rest i havent update yet!
does anyone knows how does parkroyal's food taste? any good?? any comment? service??
and if u need anything do let me know. my quotation is based one a 200 pax quotations though.
E&O always ripped people off ever since they got popular. Evergreen Laurel is a good choice. I had my wedding there and everyone commented that the food is great!
Happy deciding on where you wanna have your dinner.
thanks babes! e&o is like major samurai sword dude... anyways... im thinking of parkroyal, e&o (if my FIL wants convenience as it is in town) because i want a garden civil ceremony!!!
any other suggestions, csy??
you can check out lone pine...nice breezy place for garden wedding too. E&O is pricey.

Omigosh, I should have joined this forum much earlier. I was so frustrated with Richard of Steel Guitar too. He promised to give me this singer, that pianist but on the real day...turned out to be all part timers. People that I never seen before. Worst still there was a few songs whereby the guitarist played then stopped, like doing testing. Actually i didnt hired guitarist too, I only wanted 2 singers and pianist. Also the MC is used in 2 functions halls. The MC is Steven Yeoh, so lousy. He didnt create the environment at all. He also sang chinese sad songs which I strictly told them before my AD, no chinese sad songs! He is seen only at the beginning of my wedding then dissappeared. I really regretted using them!

Hi, Im new here.
I'm thinking of having my wedding dinner at Hai Lee Tower Palace Restaurant at Komtar 59 Flr. Anyone tried their food b4? Any comment?
Thanks
lolo, do you mind to share the contacts with me? do you have the photos of the environment there? i'm actually working at KL so hardly go back to do my survey... I would appreciate if you could help me.. thanks
Hi Rosayee,
I don't have the photo of the restaurant. But as wat I know, they r renovate their restaurant. Now they have 2 halls, 1 can serve abt 50+ tables, another one for 23 tables. You can contact Ms Tan @ 012-4066229.
Hi BabyM,
My dinner will be on 30th Nov 2008. I did survey for others rest....almost get the menu & price from all of the rest in Pg... I only need abt 20 - 22 tables, therefore some of the rest not suit me lo...too big d.
Hi csy,
Thanks for your comment. I did checked with my friend who attend the dinner at Hai Lee on 31/12, she said the food ok wor... Anyway I have booked Hai Lee for my wedding dinner. I will talk to the manager and ask her to make sure the fish is fresh and food serving is ok.
I did went to Jade Palace for menu & price. The person in charged there quite LS, he dun even want to give me menu!! (maybe I'm only 'small fish' to them, i only need 20 - 22 tables, so he dun want to entertain me)
hi lolo,rosayee
sad to hear Jade Palace ppl treated you that way. When my sister went there, they are very nice to her. Hai Lee one u better be careful, they may promise you but in the end if the food is not good on that night, what can you do right? My friend went food tasting before her wedding everything was great but on the AD the seafood was horrible but when she confronted the manager, he just say that nothing much he can do. and my friend was unhappy because all her relatives also complain about the food.

CSY,
I've booked mine there which is whole floor downstair. Attended cousin son's wedding dinner there before, everything seem okay there when I was there. Personally, I wouldn't want to share with others...
Hi Yvonne,
When is your wedding? I advise you go for food tasting and change the fish if you can. If you not sharing the hall then ok la.

Hi everyone,
I'm finding a nice venue which can accommodate abt 80 tables but roughly wif a budget of RM400 per table. Is that possible wif a garden wedding? or sth else which is special??? other than the traditional restaurant wedding.but if not,any good chinese restaurants in penang? I'm in a bit of a rush actually. haha....thanks everyone!
Hi L&J,
Garden wedding i dont think u can get at RM400. At least RM700 and above for hotels. Chinese restaurants which can accomodate up to 80 tables, you can try Jade Palace Restaurant. Huge hall, no pillars. You can engage your own deco and the place is perfect for wedding. Their wedding menus start from RM388 onwards, which is within your budget. The food is great and service is good also. My sis had her wedding there and everyone commented it was superb! If you need the contact, let me know.

Hi, anyone have any comment on wedding dinner @ Paradise sandy bay resort?
BabyM,
I just attended a wedding at Laguna Ballroom in Mar'08. It is an oblong shaped ballroom. when the bride and groom enter, it is really nice. can see both sides of tables, guests. Food is so so. Acceptable generally compared to Gurney or G-hotel.

Other than Kanaga and Gaik Cheng, is there any other good sales coordinators to liaise with at G Hotel regarding our wedding reception? Went to see Gaik Cheng a couple of weeks back and found her not exactly satisfactory.
Besides, has anyone been to a wedding reception at G Hotel? How was it?
Hi lovelove,
i went to a wedding reception at G hotel early this year. frankly the ambience is great. you pay mainly for the ambience as the food is lousy. it is not tasty at all and the fish, prawns are not fresh. What else do you want to know?

Bonjour!
Hi everyone, I just got to know about this forum recently and I think its great!
I am from Penang and currently living in France. I am planning to have my wedding reception in Penang on 21st June 2008. The wedding ceremony is fixed in the morning in a temple in Georgetown.
As you all realize, it is not easy to arrange for the dinner as I am far far away. But I hope you guys can help me and hopefully things will be easier!
My guests will be 150 (or 15 tables) and i would like to have an outdoor wedding reception like in a garden. I have tried to call (which is hard as the time difference) and still waiting for proposals. My main concern is of course the pricelist and i am looking for a budget of RM400 - RM500 per table. I dont mind if its chinese sit-down style or indian/international buffet. I am also considering an indoor reception just in case i can't find suitable garden reception.
What you guys think of a wedding planner? I am also considering to hire one (ex. Touching hearts). But i am not sure how are the charges will be.
So please feel free to email me for ideas and suggestions.

Hi Tana,
i dont think your budget of rm400-500 isnt enough. E&O hotel's minimum charge per table is rm688++ per table for 2008 weddings. Forget about hiring Touching Hearts as they topped up the prices of all the quotations they get fr you. If you can better source on your own and save the money for something else.
You can check out Evergreen Laurel Hotel - Evergarden Restaurant, the price per table around RM700 nett. They can cater for up to 15 tables, you take up the whole restaurant that night. Nice ambience.

Ahpao
My suggestion to you is to have an idea what kind of atmosphere tat you want to have and the kind of budget that you have to work with first before deciding on the venue yourself. For 30-35 tables most hotels will be happy to accomodate you.
If you are in penang, your job is made simpler unlike those of us who is actually planning from far away and doing our own calls. Try talking to their Sales and Marketing people first, they do not normally turn away potential clients.
Yes, I agree with Allyson. Ahpao, what is your budget for the wedding reception actually? What is your budget for each table? Gurney Hotel and G-Hotel costs RM600+ after tax per table during peak season. I do have quotations for the hotels you mentioned above except Evergreen Hotel and I did met up with Gurney Hotel and G-Hotel sales person before too. Please PM me if you want the quotations.
Hi...
Gurney hotel and G hotel's food is lousy. Some dishes come also cold. Evegreen Laurel is much better. If you need the contact person, let me know, I had my wedding there last year.
