I don't agree with the writer's views, she admits to being an employee of a public health and human rights NGO and yet, she is being judgemental about sex workers. I think if you are a true professional in your line of work, as a public health employee and human rights advocate, you cannot afford to be judgemental because it would affect how you interview or help these 'victims'. These people whom the writer interviews would feel even more isolated because they feel that they are being judged by someone who is suppose to be on their side. When sex workers have to deal with a conservative public health employee, they might choose to go underground and not seek help from the employee. I also find it wierd that a public health employee can be new to the Malaysian HIV/AIDS scenario. Where has the writer been in the past few decades? Sleeping?

I also think it is seriously unprofessional of her to write a judgemental article about her acquaintance who seeks male escorts, it is possible that this person confided in the writer thinking that since the writer is a public health and human rights NGO employee, she would be more understanding and open-minded about her situation. Instead, her acquaintance got 'backstabbed' big time!

I also find it ridiculous that this Dr Karina Razali made a statement such as this:

''Dr Karina Razali pointed out, we have made a gross mistake of inferring "disempowered women" as poor innocent victims of HIV, while the marginalised groups are treated as the "cause" of it all.''

Again, it shows that the writer and this so-called doctor has taken a very judgemental approach in reporting the result of the studies. Anyway, if the writer is really serious about 'empowered women' who seek male escorts, why didn't she conduct her own study about this category of women in relation to HIV infection? Being a public health and NGO employee, she would have the resources to do so and if she can't conduct her own study, she could try to at least compile data on this category of women, may it be in msia or other country/countries. Without having any serious data in her 'essay' and just relying on anecdotal evidence (which happens to be her acquiantance), how can the readers take what she says seriously? The figures she provided in her essay, is not sufficient proof;

''The feminisation of HIV in this country is a worrying situation. UNAIDS reported in its 2006 report on the global AIDS epidemic, in South-East Asia alone, women represented 29% of adults living with HIV. The infections are heterosexually-transmitted HIV cases.''

Fine, but what is the percentage in msia?

''A large number of them are housewives. The Malaysian Health Ministry June 2007 report stated that 2.4 women were infected with HIV each day.''

Fine, but how many men are infected with HIV each day? This data makes more sense if you can compare it with the data on men so that you know which gender has a faster rate of infection.

And now my question is, out of the total no of women in msia infected with HIV, how many of these women are 'empowered' women who seek male escorts? You don't have to be a rocket scientest to answer this question, I assume that this category of women is the minority.

What I really don't like about this article is how the writer tried to manipulate the data to prove her point and taking the easy way out in the fight against HIV and that is ''assigning blame on someone''. People like her are not mature enough to work as a public health employee. If you zoom in on the wrong cause, you take away attention from other more real and important issues in the fight against HIV and that can be very dangerous. I'm not saying that I'm all for empowered women who seek male escorts, but what i'm saying is that i do not want to form a moral judgement on these women and I do not agree in 'scapegoating' these women when they are obviously not the cause of the HIV problem. I also do not deny that there may be women in this category who are infected with HIV and that they are also part of the problem, but they should not be the focus in the fight against HIV.

Articles such as these, do more harm than good because it is written in a judgemental tone and doesn't have enough data to substantiate the claims.

In today's star online, there's an article entitled:

Some men with AIDS knowingly take more wives

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...&sec=nation

Excerpt taken from the article:

''AARG convenor and USM’s school of social sciences dean Assoc Prof Dr Ismail Baba said that, according to statistics revealed by Health Ministry, 80,938 people have been tested positive for HIV.

“Of the number, a 6,473 of them are women. And 80% of them got HIV from their husbands,” he said.''

This means that only 8% of HIV positive people are women and out of 6473, 80% were infected by their husbands. The writer, Dina Zaman or whatever her real name is, should learn to do proper research before writing for the papers.
