well, tiger, dun worry i;m sure you will think of something nice to give away. as for me...i'm thinking of abandoning the idea of favors. sigh....

, with that money, i tot i might just get a nice wedding cake, like the ones featured somewhere in this forum and serve it to the guests who comes for lunch or something. at least it will be appreciated more if it's a yummy cake. well, i won't get to serve all 450 guests but at least to my clos relatives and friends.

still thinking though....

hi syuen, are we getting 5 tiers dummy cake from renaissance?

if yes, thinking of DIY my own wedding cake. have to discuss with my mom this weekend. thinking of asking my mom to bake the cake, and i will decorate the cake with marzipan icing with fresh flowers. Not sure if this idea is feasible.. need to explore further :P

as for wedding favors, still in dilemma. maybe i'll just drop the idea too since renaissance is giving away fruit cakes.

have u met up with Yvonne to discuss about the banquet details? my AD is in Nov, not sure when should we start to discuss with them.

hi tiger, yup i think the hotel still providing the dummy cake.

wah you making your own marzipan, you must be good at baking! i think it will look nice but make sure that the flowers you use are safe and no pesticide or so on. haha me a bit paranoid. i saw on one of these threads on wedding cakes and the decoration is so nice

yeah me almost dropping the idea of favors already but i think FH is quite keen still no answer yet. the cake from renaissance the last i ate was not so good...not even fruit cake. taste like banana cake actually...probably dats the only fruit left. hiak hiak.

i've not discussed with yvonne on anything. maybe will do some discussion with her this coming july for the invitations and i will also ask what is their latest decor, since they say they are changing.

maybe you can do the same when you want to confirm on the wedding invitations. i'll keep you posted if they have anything new since my wedding will be in oct. ^_^

haha, i agree.. i tried the cake b4..hmmmm

wow, at least ur FH is keen of wedding favors, mine think is a waste of money. :(

i'll be attending a wedding dinner at renaisannce this month end. will let u know if they have anything new.

hiya tiger, ya do let me know if they have included anything new yet. It's been a long time since they refurbish the place....at least they are doing it now....so i guess we are kinda lucky.

You should look at City Bayview and Century Mahakota :o

They don't keep the ballroom well. Very teruk looking...by my standard at least. They should put more effort in upkeeping it.

Hi syuen & tigerNMable,

Time to reactivate this thread for Malacca brides :) !

I'm having my wedding dinner at Renaissance too in October. Don't really like the new chair covers coz they look too plain, plus no ribbons behind. I deal with Carol but so far, hasn't contacted her since I paid deposit. I've seen their new wedding invitation cards too - very nice! She said she'll be in touch with me by August.

From what my parents and others said, Renaissance serves better food than other hotels. That's why my FH and I chose it. And know what? Holiday Inn (next to Century Mahkota) is opening in Oct!

Oh ya, about the expensive backdrop, I managed to find another person to print it at a cheaper price at RM300+. I've seen the backdrop sample and it's actually a huge photo of bride & groom, taken from BS. The effect is rather nice la.

hi jhow,

i deal wif the other girl yvonne...dun really know if she's still around. anyway food is better at renaissance i think. ya i saw the new holiday inn, look very modern and stylish...but then again dun know if they are ok in wedding events or not.

i didn't get to use the new wedding card...had the old pink ones. i had my own backdrop too....told them to do one of the design but ask them not too charge me becos i allow them to reuse my backdrop for other weddings after mine.

don't hope too much on the decor from renaissance.....i was a bit disappointed in d end but nvr mindlar....all over and done with.

i think dealing with carol should be ok....my sister delt with her for her wedding. i deal with the other girl...hmmm, she did try to help but i still feel that carol is better...dunno, maybe she's been there for a long time and hv better experience.

Syuen, was the overall decor at Renaissance satisfactory? Carol said I need to top up $$ if I wanna change another type of flowers coz they're currently using daisies. Syuen, did you give out any favours? I'm thinking of fortune cookies although my mom said "Malaccans don't go by the favours-giving law". Do you guys thinking giving a personalised fridge magnet is too campaign-like/commercialised?

Oh, any nice florist in Melaka to recommend? I'm getting my bridal bouquet from KL and other stuff like car decor and corsages from Melaka florist. Sad thing is, the florists there don't import flowers like KL florists. Still quite old-fashioned.

what?! they actually charge the flowers...i tot you get to pick what flowers you wanted....at least i did....i had roses and ivy leaves...hmmm..must becareful fo their tactics. negotiate, negotiate, negotiate.

i didnt give out favours....wanted to but after counting the cost...i tot it was a bit too much....i had like 40 tables. combined wedding. so what i did was i gave out favours during my tea ceremony....a bit biased though....i only gave to my female relatives that i pour tea to....and only my side of the family. haha...well my favour was a bit expensive so i cant simply give out to anyone.

as for florist....again, malacca ones are not so nice. well, i did my own hand bouquet, got my own flowers though....and also my own car decor....simple ones. but i guess it looks kinda ok. :)

Wow syuen, you're very hands-on! I don't think I'll do a good job out of doing my own hand bouquet. Can consider opening your own wedding planning biz ;)

Thanks for your tips. I'll make sure I re-negotiate with them on deco, summore they only have gold or maroon colour for the deco cloth. So not my theme colours. If I want something different, gotta go Bunga Raya and buy. Good idea for favours...I didn't think of giving to selected guests only. Maybe I should get some nice ones for my chee muis only. It's actually quite a sum there if we were to give everyone.

Anyway, I read wrongly again. I thought this thread was started like some time this year. Mabuk already, hehehe....seems that TigerNMable also married liau....blur me again :P Sorry!

But syuen, thanks for your advice.

no problem...yup i guess we r all married already. you can go to bunga raya to purchase the organza cloth or the netting if you dun like the colours that they have....i ended up with maroon and cream. sigh....choices very limited in malacca.

oh ya, the dummy wedding cake they provide, darn horrible! and another tips, bring ur own champagne bottle! cant trust them. my champagne bottle couldnt pop at all. disappointed with that also.

as for being hands on...dun...it tires you out. i got sick like the week before i got married. had to get antibiotics from doctor....i think i was under too much stress trying to do everything myself.

Syuen, about the dummy cake, do you think I should get a real cake? I read somewhere that wedding cake is actually an ancient tradition - meaning sweet beginning for the newlyweds. Couple is supposed to feed themselves with the cake after cutting it, before sharing with guests. But I'm going to have like 55 tables and so, my cake will be too big and expensive for my budget. Maybe I should just order a two-tier cake, cut it, feed each other, and then pack it home for relatives only, heheheh! ;) If not, how to afford such a big cake?

Ok, point noted for champagne bottle. Will double check with the hotel coordinator. I guess it's because the hotel biz in Malacca isn't that competitive, that's why they can afford to be lackdaisical. We don't have much hotel options there - either Renaissance, EQ or Century Mahkota. Sigh...hope everything will turn out ok. Thanks again!

hi jhow,

seriously, i prefered the old wedding cake that they have alhtough it looked old fasiohioned....i wasnt too please with the one they provide me though it was their new "modern" design....i felt it was a bit cacat and the top of the cake they decorated with ferns....look like jungle and didnt jive with the whole cake thingy....welll too bad...by the time i saw it was too late...it was my wedding day!

but i did have my own cake actually......at home. my mum ordered for me a 2 tier cake with icing and she decorated it with fresh flowers though the cake maker did gave us small tiny sugar flowers. so after tea ceremony, i did the cake cutting and served the cake to d guests at my house which everyone enjoyed it!

you can still have your own cake at the hotel....and cut it though it will be very expensive to do a big big cake. maybe a medium size. anyway, the cake that is served to the guests at the hotel does not come from the one that you cut on stage. on stage it's just a dummy cake. you just pretend to cut it :P

Wow, I am really learning a lot from you, syuen. I want to do the cake tradition ceremony and at the same time, don't want to burst my budget. Probably I should do what you do...get a nice cake, and cut it after tea ceremony at home. More intimate and budget-wise that way. I saw many nicely decorated cakes in magazine...with fresh flowers. Just wondering, wouldn't the flowers 'dirty' the cake and is it safe for consumption after that? I'm a bit 'kia si'. :P

OK OK, must make sure they show me the dummy cake before my actual day!

jhow, it should be pretty safe...make sure the flower are cleaned nicely. i was doing a lot of things on my own to save budget. the flowers was only decorated on the cake that morning itself by my mum...surprisingly it looks really pretty.

i think i do have a photo somewhere in one of my folders on my office pc ...lemme check.

Hullo syuen, tiger & jhow... I just discovered this forum yday night so I'm pretty new here.. I'm from Malacca too but currently working in KL. Need a lot of pointers from you girls coz I MIGHT be having my wedding ceremony this Sept.. the word "MIGHT" is because, I'm afraid I wont be able to make it on time since it's less than 4 months' time from now.

Anyway, if nothing goes wrong, my AD would be on 23/9/07, it's a Sunday so I'm doing a luncheon instead, at Renaissance Melaka... and yes jhow, maybe we can compare notes.. so far I also deal with Carol and she said to meet up in June to pay the deposit and discuss things in details.. how much did you pay for the deposit? Is the min tables required - 40 tables? I doubt I would have this much though!

joeyjoe, welcome to the thread! It's always nice to see someone from the same town here.

About your possible wedding in Sept, I think you should go ahead with it. I only started my wedding preparations in April, my wedding is in Oct. Now, most things are ready, just waiting for coordination with hotel only, and there's 4 more months to go. If you need any help/tips/vendors on your wedding (eg.florist, AD photographer, videographer, backdrop decor etc), can always ask me. Will be more than happy to share!

I've already paid RM5K deposit to Renaissance to secure the booking. I'm not very sure abt the minimum number of tables but I did hear from another Melaka friend about this 40 tables thingy too. Maybe you can ask Carol again. You should go and have a look at their ballroom, to see if you like the ambience or not. Overall, I heard from ppl that Renaissance's food is better than other nice hotels (no offence to brides who have booked their weddings at other hotels in Malacca), that's why me and my FH decided on it.

Thanks jhow for your speedy reply.. I'm actually fretting here bcoz I really have no idea on where to start first and on top of that, I'm very busy with my work currently, that's why I am afraid I won't have enough time for the wedding preparation.. Would appreciate it very much if you could share with me the tips/info/vendors on those things.. will PM you about it okie :)

And yes, I've also heard that amongst the hotels in Malacca, Renaissance is the bext, which explains the higher price too!!! I haven't been to its ballroom in more than 10 years already.. hehehehe.. so dunno how it actually looks like now.. EQ M'cca is fully booked, Century Mahkota offers cheaper package but I'm not too sure of its quality bcoz one friend said it's comparable to Renaissance while the other said it's terrible.. so I'm, not taking the chance!!! :D

Welcome swtgl79!!! Yeah I've heard of Lim Tian Puan in Malim too (beside Brother's), the parking space is very spacious so you no need to worry abt that! My friend told me that we can buy the wedding stuffs from the shops in Kg Jawa.. can get almost all things in one spot, save time and trouble looking for them!

swtgl79, you're from Malacca too! My sister also had her wedding dinner in LTP, but at the old one. I've never been to the new one but according to my mom, the food there has always been good. I'm working in PJ but both my FH and I are Malaccans, so everything's gonna be held there. My family house is at Taman Sinn in Semabok area. Malacca is very small, so there's very likely that we may know each other already. Or if not, maybe our parents or relatives do!

Wow, I didn't know Malaccans are so advanced already...the shop even has website? That's rare! Anyway, my mom will take care of all the GDL stuff, she's very experienced already :P (I'm the last daughter to get married).

joeyjoe, I will e-mail you later. My cousin had his wedding at Century Mahkota last year. The ambience was quite nice (in fact, I prefer this ballroom to Renaissance's) but the food was really uhmmm...cannot make it la. I mean, if someone as 'cinchai' as me will complain, that means it's really bad la :) Alternatively, maybe if your reception doesn't have to be in a hotel, you can try asking Orna. It's a bit far but at least there's ample parking space and the food is good.
