Regular Breast Ultrasound

Recommended Posts

Due to family history reasons, I have to go for breast ultrasound every 6 months. Anyone else out there also going for regular/ periodic breast ultrasound scan?

My doctor previously recommended me to a good radiologist, but recently this radiologist is no longer around. Any recommendation of a good radiologist for breast ultrasound out there?

(p/s: I had a bad experience with an inexperienced radiologist and that gave me and our family a nightmare coz of their wrong interpretations and recommendations in their letter to my doctor)

Hi dear, for my case it is recommended by my breast specialist doctor. My mum had breast cancer, and for me I had a tiny lump removed 2 years ago.

I have to go for ultrasound every 3 months initially, and now every 6 months. As ultrasound does not produce any harmful radiation effect on me, it is ok for me to follow.

I am <30 years old, not pregnant nor breastfeeding

Btw, it is recommended to go for breast ultrasound after your period. Breasts are usually swollen and tender before period and hence the scan my be less accurate.

Hi Lilian,

Regardless of family history, it is advisable for every gal to do their own breast self examination (BSE) every month to notice any changes in their breasts. This will help initiate further check ups if needed. You can ask your doctor or gynae on how to perform BSE at home on your own. It is quite simple and only takes a few minutes.

However as for ultrasound scan, it is up to the individual. Some people will do it once every year as part of their yearly medical check up (including pap smear), or some will do it only when recommended by doctor if there are any abnormalities detected.

Bottom line is, spend time to know your breasts well so that you can notice any abnormalities asap and discuss it with your doctor.
