FM or whole milk?

Recommended Posts

Whats the difference between FM n whole milk?

I heard ppl switch fr FM to whole milk. When shud i start the switching?

You can only switch once your child is more than 1 year old. Before that, its either breast milk or formula milk. Most people in western countries do the switch, however, in Asia, most parents still continue with formula milk because according to my pead - they are not aware that they should do the switch and its not a common thing here. Besides formula milk's advertising is so effective in Malaysia saying things like your child will be a genius if he/she drinks this brand of formula milk, that most parents will succumb to the advertisements.

I switched mine when he turned 1 year old. And you can use any brand of pasteurised full cream milk as long as it is not the low fat version as your child still needs lots of fat in the diet.

The main difference between toddler FM and fresh milk is that toddler FM often has added flavours and sweetening agents (especially for older children) whereas fresh milk comes in plain form (discounting those that are flavoured, that is). This is one of the main concerns shared by my friend who specialises in paed nutrition. Everything else is just added stuff which you can easily provide for your child if they have a balanced meal.

Yes, like yummymummy, I too believe that most of the time you're paying that price for advertising and encouraging your child to prefer added flavours and sweet things over natural food sources/foods.

Also a lot of parents do not realize that from 1 yo onwards, their kid should not be drinking over 600 ml of milk (doesn't matter if fresh milk or formula). They should be getting nutrients from solids first as too much calcium can affect iron absorption.

Anyway, I actually have started introducing fresh milk since yesterday as Eva is turning 1 yo tomorrow. She's currently on a mix of FM and EBM but I plan to drop the FM and replace with fresh milk. So far, it's going okay - she needs some time to adjust to the taste of fresh milk; no such thing as she doesn't like so I don't give. That is not a house rule.

Jaylene is still on FM as my mum never like to idea of giving her chilled pastuerized milk. However, She doesnt seems to like FM especially when she is with us. So I feed her with UHT milk (unflavoured) and usually she can finish 90% of a 250ml pack. If I ever feed her FM, she will take ages to finish merely 4oz (120ml) and I must feed her via straw cup. I intend to try her on pastuerised milk next week. I hope she is ok with chilled milk in the morning.. or I may just warm it up before feeding her.

as old folks say, chilled milk or drink in the morning maybe not so good for kids, or even us adults.

I think better to warm it up

My gal will be turning one next month...So far she has only been on EBM when she is with my parents. I plan to wean her when she turns one (at least no more pumping n let her latch on at night when i get home after work). I intend to give fresh milk or the goat milk (those inside a seperate fridge in supermarkets).

My hb cant take cold milk in the morning. Not sure about little sophie. So was wondering whether can i warm up the fresh milk?

I'm giving Magnolia but brand doesn't matter - fresh milk is fresh milk no matter brand and packaging.

I have tried giving chilled - urm, that's how I drink my milk and so far, no issues - and warm; no problem there.

Just want to share a tip on how to keep your milk fresh longer. DO NOT keep it by the side of the door. This is because we open our fridge doors regularly and this creates a temp fluctuation - especially in our kind of weather. If you're in Australia or four season countries, it depends on room temp - if it's cool, then ok, can keep by the fridge door. Milk will go bad faster. Just keep your milk in the fridge, either on the shelves or in the chiller. I usually keep it in the chiller (lying down) and milk always lasts longer. Btw, the same goes with eggs too.

LOL mabel i remember u also give Eva chilled fruits rite...

if my mom was to know i was doing that, she'd kill me :P

anyways based on my logical thinking, i'd prefer to give warm stuff in early mornings (especially if there is an history of morning cold), afternoon onwards chilled or cold is ok la... no-no during the evenings/night onwards

I do it with a warmer if I want it heated up. I would not suggest the stove as I think if not done correctly the milk can be way too hot for the child. I could be wrong, perhaps you can try it and see whether it's easy to control the temperature of the milk. With the warmer, it's very easy, 2-3 min and you're done!

ahhh .. really good information as I never plan to give FM after stop BF (I really hope I can BF my gal until 1 or 2 yrs old) and was telling daddy that I wanna give fresh milk instead of FM.

Now I'm feeling released that not giving FM is alright and go for any brands of fresh milk that we can get from the market =)

So either to warm it up or drink cold is alright ya.

Other than a warmer, i can warm it out by soaking the bottle in hot water? (like warming up EBM)

just incase i need to bring milk along when we go out and i dont have a warmer at home as i have been direct feeding, the warmer is with my mum

Hahaha i think it depends on the warmer as well...I gave up with my snow bear warmer but the Avent IQ warmer is quick....My parents love it. But i dont intend to invest in another one of it as its pretty expensive

the thing abt fresh milk is...we gotta buy them more frequently rite since we cant keep them for long...

For me, I'd think that fresh milk is cheaper than formula.

2L of fresh milk here in SG costs $4 and that equals to about 22.2 servings of 90ml of milk, which is about 18 cents per serving.

One 900 gm of FM is $25 and 3 scoops (estimate 35 gm; don't have tin with me at the office so cannot tell) would give me 90ml and that equals to about 25 servings, which is about $1 per serving.

This calculation is not confirmed tho - need to check when I go back to be 100% sure. Frequency of their feed doesn't matter. It is the cost of the serving itself that counts.

Of course you have to keep on buying it. That's why it's called fresh milk. Besides, why would you want to keep milk for too long? :p

For me, buying frequently is not a problem since I do grocery shopping once every week. I just buy them then.

Is that means that the nutrition in FM is unnecessary? Can we only give fresh milk after kiddo pass 1 yr. I am thinking of wean Teresa after she turn 1. but she is rejecting FM ( been tried mamil gold and naan, no luck) , so now she still on full BM. Is that ok to total change to fresh milk after she turn 1?

she is not using bottle all the while, I am direct latch on, but if I change her to fresh milk, how she can sooth herself? she usually clam down when I latch her, do I need to give her Bootle ( she is on straw now), is this why I am work backward?

For me, FM is cow's milk with added vitamins and DHA, etc - these are things that she is already getting from a balanced diet. There is such a thing as oversupplementing. Plus I prefer it if she got her nutrients from the actual source itself, eg DHA from fish, etc. If your baby has allergies, then fine, I can understand that you wish to supplement with FM or other things. But otherwise, stuffing your kiddo with vits and supplements isn't going to exactly make them smarter. So why do we need to pay so much for something that is not needed or worse, wasted?

Even then at 1 yo, kids should be getting their main nutrients from solids and NOT from milk (so too much milk isn't good).

Also, when I was trying to look for info on the calculation in the above post, I came across a recommendation from Dumex stating that babies above 1 you need only a minimum of 350ml of milk a day.

No, you don't have to give her milk from a bottle. Eva is taking her milk from a straw cup. What I'm doing now is replacing one feed with fresh milk and the rest with BM with FM as a backup. Her initial reaction was that she didn't quite like it but when I check on how she took it today, the sitter told me that she's okay with it, just drink. Then again, Eva can be quite wai sek. :p

Anyway, at the end of the day, it's still up to you. If you want to give FM, you can - just be aware of what you're giving and why.
