Registration of Marriage for Malaysians Working Overseas

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

My fiancee and myself are Malaysians. We are currently working abroad - she's in Ireland and I'm in the UK. We are planning to register for our marriage.

We have been researching various options to register our marriage. We will really appreciate any advice or comments, specifically regarding any options we have not considered below, things to watch out for and errors or misintepretations laid out below! Just feel free to chip in if you have something in mind!

All options we have managed to find out are as follows:

1. Register in Malaysia

http://www.lawyerment.com/library/kb/Families/Marriage/1020.htm

Delay: n/a

Notice of marriage: 21 days

Cost: RM30 + airfares (RM2500 x 2) = RM 5,030

Con: Long notice period makes this impractical

2. Register in Malaysia - Special Marriage License

http://www.lawyerment.com/library/kb/Families/Marriage/1022.htm

Delay: n/a

Notice of marriage: 7 days

Cost: RM100 + RM20 (processing fee) + airfares (RM2500 x 2) = RM5,120

Pro: Requires the least amount of documents (won't need Birth Certificate and Single Status Certificate), family members can attend. We'll treat it as a one week holiday!

Con: Long-haul flight, expensive

3. Register in London

https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/weddings-and-civil-partnership-ceremonies

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/general-info/processing-times/

Delay: 1 week to 12 weeks / 3 months visa processing time

Notice of marriage: 15 days to 3 months

Cost: £80 + Visa cost (£80) + airfare (£110) = RM1,300

Pro: Economical

Con: My fiancee will need to get a special UK visa. A normal visitor / tourist visa will not suffice. Potentially long visa application.

4. Register in Scotland

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/regscot/getting-married-in-scotland/index.html

Delay: 1 week to 12 weeks / 3 months visa processing time

Notice of marriage: Minimum 15 days. No residency requirement (see under "residence requirement": http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/scotland/relationships_s/relationships_living_together_marriage_and_civil_partnership_s/getting_married_scotland.htm).

Cost: £80 + Visa cost (£80) + airfares (£100 x 2) + accommodation (£150 x 3 days) = RM3,800

Con: My fiancee will need to get the special UK visa (as above). Potentially long visa application.

Pro: Documents can be posted 4-6 weeks beforehand. We'll treat it as a long weekend holiday!

5. Register in Republic of Ireland

http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/bdm/marriagesinireland/

Delay: n/a

Notice of marriage: 3 months

Cost: €220 + my airfare (€100) = RM1,300

Pro: Economical

Con: Very long notice of marriage. The Irish takes marriages (divorces and abortions) very seriously!

6. Register in Denmark

http://www.toender.dk/Borger/In-English/Marriage.aspx

Delay: n/a

Notice of marriage: 4 days

Cost: DKK500 + airfares (£100 x 2) + accommodation (DKK1500 x 7 days) = RM7,000

Pro: Quickest way to get married due to short notice of marriage and no special visa requirements. In addition, documents can be emailed or posted 1-2 weeks beforehand! We'll treat it as a one week holiday!

Con: Expensive

I also understand that we should re-register with the Malaysian embassy within 6 months to avoid a fine:

Just to repeat myself, all advice and comments are welcomed and appreciated!
