janicelly 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2009 sywiser,i am glad that it helps :).as for washing your nipple with soap, it's not encouraged becos it'll dry up the skin near your nipple & if it's dried, it's easier for you to get cracked nipples.if you wanna take anything with alcohol, either you breastfeed BEFORE you take OR you wait 2 hours AFTER you take only you nurse.Alcohol passes freely into mother's milk and has been found to peak about 30 to 60 minutes after consumption, 60 to 90 minutes when taken with food. Alcohol also freely passes out of a mother's milk and her system. It takes a 120 pound woman about two to three hours to eliminate from her body the alcohol in one serving of beer or wine...the more alcohol that is consumed, the longer it takes for it to be eliminated. It takes up to 13 hours for a 120 pound woman to eliminate the alcohol from one high-alcohol drink. The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount the mother consumes.you can read more hereaishiteru, too much knowledge is NOT bad at all. in fact, it'll prepare you face any challenges you are going to face & you wont listen to other people blindly. continue to educate yourself & you wont regret it, trust me.as for nipple cracks, it's always a sign of BAD LATCH. do try to watch more videos / photos on how to latch on a baby & you wont face this problem. it's normal to feel sore during 1st week bcos of the constant sucking, after that, your nipples will get use to it.as for coping after you go back to work, once you fall into a routine, you will be ok. have more confidence in youself!Bao_B,during 1st week, baby stomach capacity is very very small - 1 teaspoon of liquid is enough from baby (my obgyn told me). so dont worry you "dont have enough milk" for your baby. during 1st week, your body produces colostrum (high in antibodies) & that is enough for your baby! babies cries a lot during early days & it's NOT ALWAYS bcos they are hungry. they cry for lots of reasons. once your milk comes, count your wet & dirty diapers & you will see your baby will have enough to drink. pumping at nights (especially midnights) are not fun. i've done it & it made me even more sleep deprived. try to nurse baby as much as possible (nurse on demand) & you can maintain your supply.and Mabel is right, DONT skip night feeds. if you wanna skip nursing at night, you MUST get up to pump (but i seriously dont see what's the point cos if you dont feed you still need to get up to pump, lagi sanfu!). if you dont nurse or pump, then be ready for your supply to drop. pumping exclusively is not fun, i find it harder then nursing (i pump 4 times at work). given a choice, i will choose to nurse rather then pump! janicelly 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2009 sywiser, well, i dont have a great supply, thats why i need to pump so frequently to get my "quota" of the day, hehe. have been doing that for the past year.....o.O. actually we are supposed to pump as frequent as our baby nurse (which is not possible la, no need to work meh) BUT try to pump at least 3 times when you are away from baby. remember, the more you remove milk, the more milk your body will produce.as for dragging longer time to nurse at night, this is your personal choice. i dont practise this. although my girl is already 14 months, she still nurse once or twice at night. when she's teething / sick / learning new things / hitting development milestones, she will nurse more. although it means less sleep for me, i am glad i am able to meet her needs.i cant wait to stop pumping! no need to wash bottles & pumping parts everyday, blissful!aishiteru, paed did warn me about sou hup yuen. she told me baby's liver immature to "filter" whatever is inside the sou hup yuen so it might caused baby to have jaundice. she didnt say anything about bak foong yuen though.i posted another view from a qualified chinese doctor a few pages back. you have to decide whom you believe in. i took the sou hup yuen later (2nd half of the month during confinement) just to please my mom. meiteoh 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2009 Quazi, if you still want to BF, then continue to BF. Don't jaga your kid as per according to other people's wishes! Share your concerns with HB and enlist some help from the lactation specialist and such. I know of friends and relatives who BF until the kid is nearly 5 years old!!!!!And like janice, I too support you!!!
janicelly 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2009 asck25,YES, your wife still can BF. Your baby is exposed to any illness she have before your wife knows she is sick. One of the beauties of human milk is that when our body makes antibodies to combat an illness, these antibodies are passed directly into our milk, giving protection and disease-fighting abilities to our baby, too.Personally, I've breastfed my girl thru fevers, coughs & colds & she's still ok. Please remember if your wife need to take medicine, do inform the doc she's breastfeeding. Doc might prescribed a milder medicine for her.Take care! Aphrodite 0 Report post Posted March 28, 2009 Anyone can share info on how often and how much to feed a 3 month old baby? I used to feed my son 24/7 1st month due to "demand feeding" and then cut down to maybe half an hour to 1 hrly due to hunger cries (same as demand feeding??) but I noticed he is gaining weight too fast (was 2.56kg @ birth and 6.8kg @2.5 months) and also always throwing out milk like water pouring out from a bucket. Those are signs of overfeeding....Now I try not to feed him when he cries for food so I can feed him less frequently at about 2 hourly. I am also feeding him less for 10 mins instead of the 15 mins which I used to during each session so he takes in less hind milk. Is there anything else I can or should do? Thanks. hushling 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2009 I would like to ask, for those who have been BF for like more than 6 months, or some to about a year, will your breast head south more? will it loose it's capability to still stand tall as before? Can we prevent from this to happen? My sister in law did made a remark saying that BF too much will cause that happen. Is it really true?

janicelly 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2009 Aphrodite,Why do you feel your baby is gaining weight too fast? Did your paed state so? It is normal for babies to gain a lot during early months. As for throwing up milk like water pouring from a bucket, I DONT think that's a sign of over feeding. Normally if overfed, your baby will regurgitate but not till the stage of projectile vomitting (that's like what you described here). Does this happens after every feed? Have you brought him to see a paed regarding this? Sorry I asked so many questions but need clearer picture before I can try to help. There is a thread here where some members posted about their babies' regurgitating problem. You can go have a look & hopefully you'll be able to get some helpful tips. Please try not to limit his time at the breast cos an imbalanced of foremilk & hindmilk will create another set of problem :s. I will suggest you to go & see a certified lactation consultant if the problem persist. PM me if you need contacts.husling,I've been breastfeeding for the past 14 months & I can tell you mine still look normal, hehe.

I sought help fr the doctor and he explained that my baby is greedy and big sized. And also, when I told friends I feed him 1/2 - 1hrly because he wants it, they said it's too often. Then when I evaluated myslf, I feed him so often, he throws up so often, and yet he can gain so much weight in such a short time so I thought to myslf he may be overeating??? I also checked with the boys weight chart and he is almost overweight. It scares me as he was so light at birth. I took him to the doctor yesterday and he is weighing @ 7.5kg now and he's only 3 months old. Im really worried... I'll PM u for the certified lactation consultant to seek professional help. Thanks again.
janicelly 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2009 Aphrodite,I am not a doc so I can comment much about your baby's weight but sometimes have to see his genes too - is you or hubby big sized? Apart from that each baby's growth is different. The chart is used as a guideline only. Boys tend to be bigger eaters then girls too. My girl doubled her birth weight at 2nd month too & AFAIK, it's normal. The frequent feedings IF it only happens occasionally, I would say it might be growth spurts (3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 mths & etc). BUT you know your baby best. Trust your mama instincts & get another opinion.I've PMed you the contacts. Hope it'll be of help. Good luck!

Don't know if other breastfeeding moms are experiencing this and if this is a problem how to overcome it. Anyway, I will seek professional help. Thanks for calming my panicky mind and also for the contacts.
Mickey Mouse 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2009 Dear all,I'm having a very clueless idea on what happening to my little girl. she's now turning into 4 mth old.well, 3 weeks ago, after i came back from outstation assignment, my little baby no longer want to suck from my breast anymore. she latched on, and within 3-5 second, after few suckles, she juz throw out my nipples n cry for milk. i had tried several times for few days, n no use at all in getting my bb back to my breast. which made me felt terribly bad. she only drink bm from bottle. i lost myself in this nursing strike.subsequent week.... she reject my bm. she cried for milk, the moment i bottlefeed her with bm, she reject again. i have no choice take her to see doc (juz to check whether she's having any illness or not). after doc examined her, my bb is totally fine. no teething, no fever, no cold, no infection. nothing. after check with the doc, in order to get my bb to drink bm, i have to mix my bm with formula. n my bb bottom up everytime when my bm mixed with formula. n this week, gosh.... she totally don want to drink milk. irrespective, bm or bm+formula. I really scratch my head. what's happening to my bb? why she juz don wan my bm anymore. i felt terribly depressed when i think on this. plz anyone have this problem b4? janicelly 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2009 MM,You were away for outstation assignment for very long? From what you described, sounds like she's used to the easy way of taking milk aka milk bottle. 1) What type of teat were you using? Slow or medium or fast? - It is very important to stick to slowest teat as long as possible cos our milk flow is slow compare to bottle. Could it be she's used to faster milk flow? 2) While you were away, she was fed with EBM or FM?- If she was fed with FM, possible she's used to FM, that's why she rejected EBM?I am firing blanks in the air cos dont know the real situation here. Meanwhile KEEP ON PUMPING to maintain your supply & we'll try to work around this problem. What I can suggest is :-1) Try to nurse her when she's sleepy. Some babies are more willing to nurse when they are sleepy.2) Try to nurse while walking. The motion might help.3) Create more chance for extra cuddling & skin to skin contact. If possible, go topless & let baby lie on your chest so that she can smell you & feel close to you.4) Nurse in a quiet, darken room5) Any possibility of avoiding bottle feeding? You can feed the baby your milk with a cup, eye-dropper, feeding syringe, or spoon (I know it's a slim chance but just a suggestion)Useful links with tips - here & here.PM me for professional help. GOOD LUCK!!!
