Hmm.., just wondering, since I am married to Msian and contributed to Msia tax, can I deliver in the Government Hospital?

I heard that they will charge expensive for foreigner yeah? Even though my hb is Msian?

Hould be in the range of RM800 to RM2k at most. You can choose not to pay, they can't reject you.

LOL.., if I choose not to pay, they will black list me?

No, they will send you love letters to ask for money. Malaysian gov hospital's policy is to treat ALL patients regardless race, nationality and the legality of their status. They will treat firat inclusive of medication, sugeries and follow up. Money talk later. This is the reason foreigners including refugees like UNHCR flooding our public health system because it is free for them and paid by tax payer money.

It's a lose lose situation because if the gov hospital don't treat, you will see this in news media and the next think is politicized by the politician especially the opposition for being inhumane, thus they have to take all.

HUKMSC is not bad lah...

Personally, I've heard of more good things than bad...

My wife delivered a baby on May 1, 2008. Yes, I was in the labour room:

http://takenotetakeheart.blogspot.com/2008...abour-room.html

The total cost of delivery + 2-night stay = RM1,900.

B)

hi joshua,your wife is normal delivery? the price is reasonable. i tot HUKMSC shoulb be having the same charges as normal private hospital.

HUKMSC is not the public side rite? sometime i m quite confuse on rpivate side and public side

Hi, Ogosdream.

I delivered my bb girl 3.5 months ago in HUKMSC, personally I am satisfied with the services and the charges.

HUKM is a government hosp (our so called "public pool"), however, it has a private wing where there are a few O&G doctors practise their own private clinic in the HUKM at 7th floor. The charges is relatively cheaper than private hosps/ medical centres is because HUKMSC is considered as semi private, therefore, even though it is so called private, but the price is not really as costly as those private hosps/MCs. I could summarised the diffrences of HUKMSC with public pool in HUKM as follow;-

1. At HUKMSC, you could choose the gynae which at your own preference; while at HUKM public pool, you are not allowed to choose, so the gynae who will serve you is at random basis;

2. At HUKMSC, you could choose the type of the ward you want to stay (ranging from VIP suite to double bedded ward); while at public pool, you will sleep at a shared area (like normal government hospital ward);

3. Your baby will be taken care of by nurses in HUKMSC after you delivered. However, in public pool, irregardless of how you deliver your baby (either c-sec or normal), your baby will be taken care of by yourself;

4. Under public pool, the cost of delivery is much cheaper than private pool, whereas c-sect under public costs under RM 1k, whereas, in private for the same method of delivery, it could cost you up to RM 5k or more (it is case to case basis);

5. Waiting time in public is extremely longer than private pool, like in public pool you have to go as early as you could as you need to take number and wait for the Q. If you visit HUKMSC, your appointment is pre-made and waiting is relatively much shorter than public pool.

Nevertheless of the differences, there is a mutual point where regardless which pool you are from, there is no diffrences in term of the facilities provided during your delivery in the labour ward. Meaning to say, there is only one labour floor in HUKM and you will be in the same type of labour ward/ OT room as those from public pool. In my opinion, it is good in a way where generally facilities/ equipments in government hosp are much better as well as advanced than those private hosps/MCs, therefore, by using the same labour ward as those in public pool, will generally benefit us.

These are what I could list down. Hope this help.

Yeah, for the antenatal classes, HUKM do conduct as well, during my time I paid RM 100/pair. Class is conducted in the weekend, the talks are quite informative and useful for me, at the end of the session, there is an orientation to the labour ward and patient ward.

Yes, Maesy explained well. Another plus point is that my wife was in a single room for 2 nights. I don't think you can have a single room, normal delivery and misc for less than 2K for a private wing of a govt hospital.

Besides HUKMSC, I heard Putrajaya Govt Hospital is not bad as well and way much cheaper! :cool:

3. Your baby will be taken care of by nurses in HUKMSC after you delivered. However, in public pool, irregardless of how you deliver your baby (either c-sec or normal), your baby will be taken care of by yourself;

This is a bit misleading. Your baby will be still under the care of the nurse untill discharge. The nurse will help you take care of the baby. However the baby will be place beside your bed, it is called rooming in, it is to encourage breast feeding. The baby is NOT left entirely to the mother's care after delivery.

The public wing and private wing care are the same except that: In private wing:

1. Got 1 to 1 care by specialist.

2. Shorter waiting time in antenatal clinic.

3. Probably less smiling from doctors and staff in public wing.

4. No 'disturbance' by medical student at private wing (hey, if the student not given opportunity, how they are going to learn?]

Otherwise, all aspect of care are the same following the obstetric principles.

dear all,

i am currently visiting Klinik Ibu Mengandung for monthly check-up. If i planned to give birth at government hospital, when should i start to register myself at Government Hospital? Do we need referral letter? I am a bit confused when "refferal letter" is need to give birth in government hospital.

When do i start to do check-up in Government Hospital? Or i need to do the check-up in Klinik Ibu Mengandung until my due date?

Do i need to pay any deposit for Government Hospital?

I am planning either to give birth at UMMC or HUKM, both not sure about the private wing that most of you have mentioned. What's the different? Isn't it the same Dr & nurses will be attending the patient selecting either private or public maternity ward?

Or, private = you give birth in a room, no other people except, you, dr, nurse, your husband.

public = few mommy in a room, few different dr. attend to their each patient.

Please enlighten me with the procedures and my friend told me that nurse will scold if scream too loud....but she also mentioned that it's extremely painful. Further, just want to check whether they will give patient epidural injection for public pool or only applicable for those opting private pool?

govt hosp register at 7th month.

yes, need referral letter to do booking - u can ask yr nurse at klinik to write for u. (some hosp accept nurse letter, some will want doc letter. ask yr selected hospital. each hospital got slightly different requirement)

depends on yr hospital, some will do the follow-up checkup. some will tell u to continue at klinik & only come when its time to deliver,

some wil ask for deposit when do booking, some will only collect deposit when u're admitted. again, check with yr selected hospital.

private wing will charge more. similar to private hospital - u go there for gynae checkup, etc.

govt hospital, whoever is on duty will attend to u.

public hospital delivery room is just u & yr attending nurse/doc & husband.

its like customer service, some nurses hv good customer service; some bad. so depends on who u get. they're only human. basically, they just want u to save yr energy to push.

they can only give epidural before u dilate to a certain cm. if u dilate more then that, private & public also won't give u the epidural. u can request epidural in govt (not sure if they give u - perhaps someone who has epidural in govt can answer?).

hi happi, do we need to pay deposit when do booking at hospital putrajaya? if needed, how much?

at hospital putrajaya, can we choose the doc to deliver during labour? or is it by any doc who's on duty that day?

was wondering if the doctor was doing the delivery or is it just nurse who do it since in some threads I saw, doc was not present or just supervising only, nurse is the midwife who doing all the jobs.

Yes, about 1k as Putrajaya only have 1st class.

But if you forget to bring money, they will allow you to get admitted as well. Gov hospital don't reject patients because of money.

You can't choose doctor, they have a system with oncall doctors cover 24 hours.

Usually there is a specialist stay in 24 hours covering the labour room as well.

Usually is the midwife who do the delivery unless you are having high risk pregnancy and doctor will pay special attention to you.

(Mind you, the midwife got MORE experience than any of the medical officer and house officers, we all learn from them).

when i went for booking, they said no need to pay deposit. Just pay deposit when come for delivery. so when they admitted me, then only ask for deposit. but since we forgot to bring cash (had to rush to hospital 1am, they said just pay the next day). deposit was rm350, since all the 1st class wards were full, stayed in 3rd class (4 beds). when discharge just pay the balance. actually, no difference in class, just means either single room, twin sharing or 4ppl sharing. treatment, facilities, room condition, nurses, docs all the same. when u're admitted, just hv to take whatever room is available coz putrajaya is always full, very popular.

nckeat is correct, cannot choose doctor. i think the senior doc was the one that did rounding every morning & then assigned the juniors what to do for each case. for delivery, it was midwife & nurses that attended to me. they're very professional & helpful. it was a smooth delivery. after delivery & stitches, then a junior doc (or intern?) came to check the stitches again. next day, another doc checked the stitches again before discharge.

Hi Nkeat,

Read most of your posts and found them really helpful. It is so good to have pro like you around in the forum to answer to our questions.

I need some advise here I am 26weeks preg now, I am 34 years old and stay in Kelana Jaya, wanting to opt for UMMC but seems not really rated hightly among the mums here and you also written some quite favourable remarks for HUKM and GHKL and not really much on how is UMMC, I know it is a sort of training centre ...but is the facilities ok, blood bank sufficient , quality of nursing staff and noumbers of skilled doctors/ consultants?? How is UMSC in comparison then? I read UMSC charges similar to other private hospital,of course the service is better and some posts said that labour room is actually the ward you will be stay in and hubby allow to stay with you and baby stroll in to the room and etc.

It is advisable to make a longer journey to GHKL or HUKM from Kelana Jaya in case I begin to have signs of labour??

I am try to save some $$ here in this economy environment, I heard it is a long queue at UMMC, I did my initial check up with Dr. Mak FS at Kuchai Entrepreanue Park and then I go to Klinik Kesihatan Kelan Jaya nowadays but still goes to Dr. Mak as the Klinik do not do ultrasound, by far my pregnancy has been normal and I am getting a sort of referral letter by my next check up (inform by Dr. Mak and Klinik Kesihatan), does the letter specify which hospital you goto for labour?? Or it is a open letter to any hospital?? Kindly advise.

Thank you,

Cindy NG

It's wrong to assume that being a training center means that it's not up to par with other government hospitals. In fact, when you are a medical/training school AND fully running hospital, you have to be ABOVE par - your standards, facilities, professors and such need to be better than good because you're training the next batch of doctors, nurses and so forth. My parents and I go there for non-maternity stuff (check-ups, surgeries, dental) and so far, we have not had any funny business. In fact, if I had a choice, I would go to UMMC for all my maternity check-ups but ended up in Europe instead. Geh.

Maybe nckeat can provide some insight for UMMC...

Whether UMMC is the 'best'centre or not, it is very subjective. BUT like meiteoh said UMMC is a training centre. It is not only a training centre for medical students to produce doctors, it is a training centre to produce specialist as well just like HUKM. And I can assure you if any of the hospitals in Petaling Jaya area having problem of managing patients INCLUDING SJMC, where do you think the 1st place they want to transfer the patient? UMMC also have one of the best centre in Klang Valley which have a good neonatal ICU.

Those who choose to deliver in UMMC, the difference of private wing and public wing is as I mentioned in my earlier posts. There is really not much difference except you get your 1 to 1 attention. All the other facilities and paramedic staff involved in your delivery is the SAME including the drugs used. SO you pay a difference of 3-4k just for that (or maybe you buy a little more smiles). The queue in UMMC is as expected very long. SO as I advised earlier, what you can do is do your antenatal follow up with a private specialist and delivery in a gov facilities. NO NEED BOOKING as long as your pregnancy is normal. The gov doctors will be very happy because their workload reduced and you got good care from specialist. They only need to deal with your delivery.

If you want to save cost, I would suggest you deliver at one of the Gov hospital NOT UMMC like Putrajaya, Serdang, Kajang, Ampang, Selayang, Sg Buloh or HKL. Your normal delivery inclusive EVERYTHING from disposable and drugs will not be more than RM50. The level of care will not be worse than UMMC (except less smiles compare to private wing).

Nckeat,

Thanks for yur quick feedback, would my age (1st baby at 34 and what if my pelvic is not so flexible compare to yournger mums to be) caused any last mins hiccups in my delivery which all then antenatal test said is normal, would that affect my dilation during contraction?? :ohmy:

How much time normally we are looking at from initial frequent contraction to the actual delivery (I now everyone varies on case to cas basis but what say the statistic??) Am I save to travel to GHKL, Sg.Buloh or Selayang form Kelana Jaya once I am in labour?? and at what stage you suggest we make a move to the hospital?

You mentioned that Govt Hos usually will not trun down active labour patient..but is the signs they are look for at admission it is a 3cm dilation or otherwise a frequent contraction? or bleeding or membrane burst???

I guess now I better find out all the shorter routes to KLGH, Sg. Buloh and Selayang and made my husband memorise all that in case of emergency.

Thank you,

Cindy

Nckeat,

Sorry another question, so how should I advise Klinik Kesihatan and Dr. Mak on the refferal letter where and who should the letter be address to if I do not give them a specific hospital name?? The refferal letter is not compulsary for either Private Hos or Govt Hos? right?

TQ again

In private hospital, the compulsory thing is CASH or CREDIT CARD not referral letter.

In gov hospital, they prefer you to have referral hospital. If you go when in labour, they will not reject you.

Since you are only Rh negative, my suggestion is you can still follow up in private and go to gov hospital when in labour BUT you must have all you antenatal record with you to make the gov doctor job easier.

You can just ask Dr Mak / KKIA to give you a referral letter without specifiy the hospital. Actually gov hospital will accept any letter. Private hospital will accept any letter as well (but must bring money).

The difference in gov hospital is if your letter from Dr Mak, 1st visit RM50 and subsequent RM5, all investigation (plus scan - RM50) you pay, drug free.

If your letter from KKIA, 1st visit RM5 and subsequent visits also RM5, all investigations AND drug free. Scan free.

The government hospital policy is very simple, NO PATIENTS ESPECIALLY THOSE IN LABOUR WILL BE REJECTED, ALL WILL BE ACCEPTED, with or without referral letter and with or without money, identification document or even illegal immigrants. Sometime the particular hospital may be full but usually they will make the attempt to send you to the other nearby hospital WITH their transport. SO if your pregnancy is normal so far, you really no need to have booking in gov hospital, just go when in labour BUT please bring along all the antenatal record, this will make the job of the gov dr easier because they no need to repeat the work that had been done by your private doctor.

For those rhesus negative mummy to be, i would recommend you to register at nearest klinik kesihatan before 20weeks if you wun to save some cost during pregnancy. The procedure in klinik kesihatan is to arrange for you to see a doctor when you r 20weeks pregnant for an ultrasound scan. the scan is to make sure baby growing well and confirm due date.During that time also, the doctor will arrange an appointment with O&G specialist for rhesus negative mummy at 24weeks (some blood testing will be done too and you willbe given first shot of rhogam).then they will arrange for second rhogam shot at 32weeks (another O&G specialist appointment). and lastly third shot will be given immediately after labor.Rhogam is not cheap,so advisable to take at gov hospital. Gov hospital take good care of rhesus negative mummy. My baby was immediately sent to a peadiatrician after she was born to check for any complication.She was also admited for two days to monitor jaundice even though the level is not actually that high, just for precaution.Well, thats my experience with gov hospital.

Epidural is free in gov hospital,but they will only giv when you get into labor room.the reason is they dun hav the equipment to administer epidural in the ward.so those who require epidural,plz inform the nurse when you r wheeled into the labor room. they will not ask you if you need one,you will hav to inform them.

Hope the little info help..
