Induced Labor?

Recommended Posts

hi,

may i know any mommies here are induced? i am very nervous because my doc told me if my labor dont start naturally by this week, i have to be induced :( . the reason is because my placenta is already calcified (deteriorating) & my baby is not getting enough nutrients from me (my baby is around 2.4 to 2.6kg as per doc estimation). i am very worried if induction is not successful & have to do c section (imagine have to suffer labor pain & then go thru c section  )

i've read & heard labor pain is more intense if induced, so i am sooooooo scared now. can anyone share their experience with me??

really appreciate your feedbacks. thanks!!!

hi janicelly

I had an induced labor 3 days earlier than my EDD as my gynae would be going for some seminar on my EDD and I wasnt showing any signs that I was ready for labor. We could have easily waited for the baby to come out with the help with another gynae but I didnt want to as I wouldnt want to feel uncomfortable and I was really anxious and just want Ashley to be out.

So we went ahead with the induced labor. Being a first time mother I want to experience the labor pain so I didnt ask for epidural. Big mistake cos I couldnt stand the pain as it's regular contractions like every 2 mins and me never really had period cramps for so long having to go through the labor pain it was like UGGGGHHH. The gynae has to give me narcotics medicine along with Nitrous oxide which resulted me being drowsy and ended up taking epidural cos I couldnt stand the pain. Labor was nearly 24 hours instead of delivering Ashley at noontime. Since I was so groggy and tired my gynae has to vacuum Ashley out and trust me that 5 mins was my longest time ever in my life.Ashley came out looking lifeless, not crying and her head was coneshape like and she has to be put under observation for a week but thank goodness she's all well right now.

I'm not saying induced labor is bad, it is not but I would suggest that if your pain tolerance is very low opt straight for epidural. You may hear some horror stories when things gone wrong but the percentage is very low and things wont go wrong if you have a good anaesthetist which you are highly likely to have.

And btw you would forgotten how pain it is when you hold your little one in yr arms. I went through it like any mothers did it's all worth it. The tears, the pain etc. Oh please cut your fingernails as you would be clenching your HB's hand very tightly!! :D

Good luck with the delivery and everything would be just fine. Trust your doctor and your instincts :)

mummyally,

thanks for sharing with me :) (although your experience is kinda scary, hehe). i am worried about the pain too cos i read induced labor pain are more intense then natural labor pain. i've spoken to my doctor about pain relief options & he dont really encourage me to take epidural cos he is pro natural one. he told me only 10% of his patients opt for epidural & encouraged me to try 1st. but he did say when i am admitted, they can "agak-agak" access how is your pain tolerance level. i have very severe menstrual pain almost every month until i have to take pain killer (which i try to avoid as much as i can). i dont know how menstrual pain can level up to labor pain (which i believe are much much more painful) being a 1st time mom.

may i know before your doc proceed with inducing you, did he do any test to ascertain that you are suitable to be induced? i mean tests like - how dilated you are, have you effaced etc? because i've read & heard some people are not suitable to be induced because their cervix is not "ripe" yet & it's best to go straight to c-sec (i have a few personal friends who were like that). imagine have to go through the pain of induced labor, then doc said failed, then have to do c-section *pengsan* (my imagination is running wild la, haha)

thanks for your good luck wishes (which i certainly need loads & loads of them!)

My labor was induced also.having mild contraction for 2 weeks and keeps rushing to hospital for 4 times in that 2 weeks and being told that i m not really in labor yet~my doc suggested that i induce labor ~

got induced 11:30AM , epidural around 12, doctor broke my water at around 2

2:20 the midwife notice my bb's heartbeat dropping (fetal Distress), called the doctor.

doctor reach my labor room at 2:30 and check i was only 4,5cm dilated, and told me he might have to push me into OT for c-section, i was so worried that time, luckily 2:40 i m 9CM dilated already, they help me into position ( leg lifted up and spread open)

doctor ask me to push and push, i tried to push so hard and keep asking doctor whether i was pushing correctly because my lower body almost totally numb and i couldn't feel anything, 5 mins later my baby is borned ~ i started chatting with my relatives and frens at around 15mins after labour, they was suprised because did not sound tired at all ~

i believe it's the labor pain that makes u feel tired ~ since i din feel the pain at all, epidural started before i have strong contraction~

whenever ppl ask me whether how painful is labor i gave them a blank face because seriously i have never experience it~

basically my labor was quite smooth onlly the fetal distress part scared me for 15 mins~

I have heard stories about inducing labor might cause fetal distress, cause u will have stronger contraction~

not sure if it's true but if i m pregnant again i probably won't induce this time~ but i will still go for epidural ~

My sis gave birth to her 1st child through induced labour. She said it was really really painful.

Her second child was not delivered through induced labour. She had complications during labour (baby too fat). After several hours of painful labour, finally had to go for C section.

Both her children were delivered after a series of painful experience

Epidural is good if you have really low pain tolerance or you want a pain free delivery. I know of a couple who opt for epidural the moment her water bag breaks and she watched DVD in her room while waitin to dilate fully :P

Most hospital would have but it depends on your doc whether is he a pro epidural or not. Gov hospital doesn't encourage the usage of epidural unless for certain situations. My friend delivered in GHKL and doc adviced her not to have epidural

The charges varies from each hospital and bear in mind aside from the epidural charges you also need to pay for the service/consultancy fees of the anaesthetist

I had mine at Damansara Specialist and it was RM600 (RM420 for epidural and RM180 for the anaesthetist charges). An ex colleague of mine had hers at Asunta hospital at .

BTW I dont think I want to induce labor for the next few children unless there's a need for me to do so. My bestie was wondering whether I was laughin or sobbing when I called her half way tellin 'I DONT WANT TO HAVE ANYMORE KIDS' but now looking at Ashley I want to have 2 more :P

Thks for sharing with me. At this moment, i am already admitted to hospital for inducement (mummyally,my hospital is Damansara Specialist too) so there is no turning back for me(am using hubby's hp). My dr told me apart from placenta calcification,my amniotic fluid is getting low. So for the baby's sake, it's better for her to be out. I wont be able to log in after this, will share my experience later. Please pray for a smooth delivery for me! I am still super scared!

sallycomfy, yumiko & picopico,

thanks for your good wishes. really appreciate it!!

well, i am back to work now & can share my story with the rest of you. as i posted earlier, i was admitted to hospital on 10/01/08 night to be induced. the midwife checked & told me i have dilated 1cm only & proceed to put a pill into my cervix & ask me to wait for contraction to start. all this while i was strapped to a machine with 2 belts - 1 to check for contraction & 1 to monitor baby's heartbeat. i was told to call for nurse if my contraction gets closer but i slept throughout the night with no pain at all. early next morning, the midwife came to check me again & i am still at 1cm. she then told me she will "break" the pill inside my cervix (i thought it should have dissolved over the night. i suspect she did a S&S - sweep & swipe of the membrane) & the pain started then (still bearable). i was wheeled to the delivery room at 8.30am, doc came to broke my water & the pain jumped from the scale of 3 to 8 (the highest being 10). he said "aiyo, now only 1cm also cannot stand the pain ah, have to open till 10cm you know". then i heard him telling the nurse "ini mesti tak boleh tahan sakit one" . now i've always heard people saying contraction pain will build up slowly & there is "rest time" in between contraction. mine was coming on like waves with no break in between. i tahan for about an hour then i cannot stand it any longer. i opted for a milder painkiller, jab in the bu** (pethidine, as per my doc suggestion). when the nurse gave me the jab, she told me "the painkiller will make you sleepy, sleep la". i was waiting & waiting for the painkiller to work but cant feel any effects. by that time i was almost crazy with pain & i begged hubby to let me take epidural (i feel like a failure! thought i can stand the pain as i have severe period pain every month). the nurse handed me a form & ask me to read (so that i understand the pros & cons) & sign (only the person taking epidural can sign). i just signed blindly cos by that time, if the devil ask me for my soul i would have done it without realising it. when the anaesthetist came, he was supposed to explain to me what he's going to do & pros & cons of epidural. i was glaring at him like a madwoman & he goes "i know you just want me to take away the pain" (smart guy, can read my eye signal). he quickly proceed to do the procedure - ask me to curve up like a ball & be still like a statue (when you are in pain, it's quite difficult to keep still, so i also wonder how i did it). anyway it was done in a jiffy & by 10.30am, i was snoring like a pig on the delivery bed (according to my husband). by 11.30am the nurse checked me again & i was already 9cm dilated (nurse was surprised & quickly informed my doc). the nurse asked me do i feel pain. when i say i feel a bit of sensation, she pushed all the epidural medicine in the syringe hanging from my back without informing me <_< (at that time i was "high" from the pethidine & shivering from the effects of epidural so half the time i also dont know what i was doing. felt like i was drunk). when doc came, i started pushing but i dont know i was pushing correctly or not cos i was totally numbed. ended baby had to be vaccumed.

i am sorry for the long post but i feel frustrated becos i :-

1) feel like a failure for asking for epidural. others can stand the pain, why not me???

2) feel cheated becos too much epidural was administered without my permission (not sure whether this is standard procedure or what)

3) feel cheated becos i was totally numbed, i was unable to push successfully

i am not posting this to scare the lot of you but to share my experience. by sharing, i hope those who opt for epidural should ask before hand how & who is going to administer the additional epidural. i am not saying the hospital is not good or my doctor is not good (on the contrary, i am very satisfied with their service), it's just that that incident left me a bit frustrated. hope i have not offended anyone in anyway.

sayang,

reading your reply is like replayin my labor over n over in my mind. I had the exact same experience maybe the only thing that differs was the time I delivered but the process is still the same.

I was also frustrated that I couldn't stand the pain but induced labor contraction are different from natural contractions. That's what my mom told me anyway as she went through two different labor last time.

Since you know how hard it is to push when one is one epidural, the nurses has to push on my tummy HARD like trying to squeeze something out of me. That was pretty scary but at that time I thought it was normal practice. And one of the nurses had the cheek to giggle and said aiihhh penatla I tukar tempat you tekan sini to another nurse. I was like  then what about me? Taking a walk through the park ka??

But most importantly your baby and you are healthy that's matters the most. Don't beat yourself up for taking the epidural. You are not the only one :) When I gave birth and Ashley had some complications everyone blamed me for choosing to induce labor. Being the typical chinese, baby is not ready to come out yet why must force the baby out bla bla bla. But now everyone seems to forget all about it whenever they see Ashley around. Sigh

My EDD is 20 May , Dr is talking about labour induce during last checkup.

My hubby say normally Labour induce will normally end up as C sect, which both of us dun want to.

Haiz.... now praying hard for the baby to come out to the world ASAP.

Also wanna ask how many days overdue, shall I go for C-sect / Labour Induce?

I was induced after bb is overdue by 3 days, and had normal birth.

My EDD is 17 May and I have been telling my baby to come out faster but till today there is no sign of baby wanted to come out. I still can feel the baby moving quite actively, not sure if this is normal.

I really don't want to wait any longer as am quite tired of waiting and waiting. I think I will ask my doc to induce labor if my baby still don't want to come out on the EDD day. Not sure if it's a good thing to do... :rclxub:

Me too praying hard for the baby to come out to see the world ASAP

The principle of Obstetrics is let the natural take course aiming for vaginal delivery which is the safest mode of delivery for the mother. Intervention is when necessary in situation which the risk of keeping the pregnancy is outweighing delivering the baby both for the mother and the baby.

EDD is estimated by adding 40 weeks from the last menstrual date. So it doesn't mean that the baby must come out from that day. 90% of pregnant ladies will deliver within the period of 37week till EDD plus 7 days. 10% will go beyond EDD plus 7 days. So if the pregnancy is beyond EDD plus 7 days, than only doctor will offer induction as on paper the neonatal mortality rate is doubled after this (mean the risk is carry on the pregnancy outweighing the risk of delivering the baby).

Induction of labour is an intervention, it carry more risk compare to normal onset of labour:

1. It is a uterus contracting agent mean make the uterus contract more forcefully and the baby have to take more force of this contraction.

2. It can cause abnormal CTG (fetal heart rate pattern) of baby which increase the risk of C section (along with all the risks associated with it).

3. In cases like previous scar / grandmultip (5th pregnancies and above), it can increase risk of uterine rupture.

4. More risk of uterine rupture if used along with oxytocin during augmentation of labour.

5. 30% of induction will FAIL and ended with emergency C section (and its risks).

If all aspect of pregnancy and fetus are normal, better wait for spontaneous onset of labout, it is the safest.

I am so worried after reading the risks of induced labor. My bb has been underweight since 3rd trimester and now I am 36 weeks, bb only 2 kgs. Since I opt to give birth at Putrajaya Hospital, my gynae give them a referral letter for me to have a further check up there. Today I went for ultrasound at hospital and the gynae there's has been really helpful with good explaination and also did a very details ultrasound on my bb. However, they told me the same things my gynae told me which is bb is really underweight and there's a sign of water reducing as well eventhough it's still within normal range.

So now they gave max. another 2 week times which latest by 38 weeks I need to be induced if I show no sign of labor. My gynae told me actually it's not good to have induced labor as my bb is small and it's eventually distress my bb. But, at Putrajaya we have no choice but to get induced and myself of coz if possible I wanted to go through natural delivery as well as I still have phobia of appendics operations recovery I had last 3 years ago.

Sigh.. I cant help feeling down since check up with my gynae and Putrajaya Hospital today. All I want now is just to have a healthy bb but it's make me so worried now as bb is not growing according although I gained weight normally. What if my bb cannot stand when being induced?

Gynae has no idea on this.. I think maybe i am still vomitting towards end of trimester.. therefore my bb cant absorb nutrien from me. Beside that I cant take any form of milk which make things worst sigh

hey, thanks for your info. I didn't know there are so much risk in induction of labor. :dash2:
