Baby Friendly Hospital

Recommended Posts

Dear All,

MY DD is Feb 2011. I am hoping to give birth in a baby friendly hospital, Ive been reading a lot, and know that the moment of delivery is crucial to determine the wellness and subsequent care of the baby and mum.

Features that I know include:

1. encouragement of break milk feeding

2. right after delivery, allow baby to stay with mum and immediately let the baby sucks the mum's nipple

3. not to cut the ambilical cord immediately, but leave after 10 minutes till the heart beat of ambilical cords goes off

4. allows baby and mummy to stay together throughtout the entire duration of stay in hospital.

So experienced mummies, can you please share with me what other features we should consider, and ensure hospital practices, and also, please share with me, which hospitals in Malaysia do practice these features?

First of all, all hosp encourage breastfeeding. Depends whether you are going for natural birth or c-sect. i'm sure right after c-sect, u can't really get yr bb to suck on yr nipple immediately and yr baby needs to clean up right after delivery and why need to wait for 10mins? you can stay together with yr bb through out the stay but since ur paying for everything, why not take a rest and let the hosp staff do all the work.

There are 10 principles to follow for WHO certified baby friendly hospitals. Your feathure no 3 is not one of them.

The 10 priciples are:

1. Have a written policy for breast feeding

2. Train all health staff to comply these policies.

3. Inform all mother regarding breastfeeding benefit and its management

4. Teach mother how to breastfeed even if infant is separated with mother

5. Give new born NO food or drink other than breastmilk unless medically indicated

6. Help mother initiate breastfeeding within half an hour after delivery

7. Rooming in mother and baby 24 hours a day

8. Breastfeeding on demand

9. NO artificial teats or pacifiers.

10. Establish breastfeeding support group and refer mother to these group for help.

Only hospital comply with these criterias will be awarded baby friendly hospitals.

Refer to this link for list of baby friendly hospitals in Malaysia:

ALL public hospitals are baby friendly hospitals.

Only SIX private hospitals are certified baby friendly hospitals.

I delivered at DSH and yes they do really encourage you to BF. The midwife pass my little princess to me in the delivery room for her to suckle. After she was borned, they will take a quick check n wrap her in a towel and passed her to me before cleaning her up. She was passed to me within minutes after she was borned. After letting her latch while only they take her to clean up.

They encourage mothers to room in with the baby to encourage mother to bf their babies. In a way it was also easier to bf her since she is always with me. Even if you send your bb away to the nursery, they will bring your little one back when she cries for milk anyway. It will be hard to rest as well. Bearing in mind that it is important to establish milk supply in the early days as well. But if you ask me honestly, if you intend to bf there is no such thing as taking a good rest one...You will up and feeding/pumping every 2 hrs.

My baby was with me all time in the room except when i call for the nurse to change her or when she goes for her check up with the dr.

AnsonC,

Good for you for doing research early! To know whether a hospital is really baby friendly, you can check on the following 10 steps (as per UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative) :-

* Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.

* Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy.

* Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.

* Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one half-hour of birth.

* Show mothers how to breastfeed and maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants.

* Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless medically indicated.

* Practice rooming in - that is, allow mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day.

* Encourage breastfeeding on demand.

* Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants.

* Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.

If I am not mistaken, ALL general hospitals in Malaysia is categorized as baby friendly. I know Damansara Specialist Hospital (under KPJ Group) is too (I gave birth there). Unfortunately, the list in UNICEF website doesn't list individual hospital's names but there are 114 hospitals in Malaysia that are baby friendly. Some members here also commented SJMC is too!

Re cutting of cord, that have to be communicated to your obgyn :). As for BFing within 1st hour, I managed to do that too & my baby was roomed in with me throughout my stay. You can still request for baby to be taken care at the nursery if you need a rest but once baby cries, baby will be brought to you for latching on.

Good luck on your search!

Uniquesoul,

Some believe it will benefit mother & child by not cutting the umbilical cord immediately. Google about it & you will know :).

The reason for rooming in is to encouraged bonding & BFing. When babies are placed in nurseries, you won't know when s(he)'ll be fed with formula (especially in non baby friendly hospital) & this will be a set back in your BF journey.

this is your birth plan which u may discuss with your gynae, especially for point #3. you may have your birth plan printed out and give it to the nurses/midwife to ensure that things are taken care of as you wished, like how my friend did it.

6. Help mother initiate breastfeeding within half an hour after delivery

unfortunately, that is the only thing ipoh specialist did not do for me. then again, i was really knocked out by the GA when i had the CS. can u please confirm if i can breastfeed immediately while im being stitched up?

cheers.

hi. yea, the funny thing is that, when my kid is out, one of them said to me, congratulations, it's a boy. then i asked to see my son (the face). and he just shoved my kid's family jewel right up to my face, it was just too close for comfort. though really drowsy, i was thinking, dei - apa ni??? see the jewel for what? of coz i wanna see the face ma... else if they have accidentally tagged the wrong kid (things like this do happen right?), then how can i go about identifying my kid? unwrap all diapers and start scrutinising "it" ar ??? hmm.

:wacko3:

Depends on if you've natural or c-section and your hospital's policy. For c-section, not sure about M'sia, but other forums in the US & AU have mentioned that some of their doctors allow the baby to start breastfeeding immediately when they're sewing you up in the OT or resting in recovery. My hospital didn't allow that so I only got to breastfeed 1 - 2 hours later in my own room. However before my c-section, I already mentioned to the nurses & also kept reminding hubby NOT to allow them to feed the baby.

4. allows baby and mummy to stay together throughtout the entire duration of stay in hospital.

Again, depends on hospital to hospital. Most of the private hospitals I've seen only allow rooming in for single rooms, not double rooms. The only exception I've seen is this one breastfeeding friendly private hospital. If you're using a double room, some hospitals might insist that you walk to the nursery to breastfeed and not in your own room - not sure if it's to encourage you to walk or just policy.

It's best that you bring up all your questions about the hospital's policy to your gynae or nurse during your checkup & they should be able to answer you

:lol::lol::lol:

I was also knocked out by the GA during CS. My boy was delivered around 9am and I only woke up around 10.30am at daycare and when they ask whether I would like to see my son, I said 'yes' and they immediately bring my boy to me to suckle. Boy, was he hungry...

LOL I had the same experience.. they told me 'its a boy' and proved it with his little thing.. LOL my mom later told me maybe it is important to show that so that in future some parents might not have any dispute or argument that they had a different gender...

thankfully hubby was there to see the face properly.. and also i was the only indian delivering that time.. haha

I delivered at Gleneagles KL. They passed the baby to me to BF immediately after giving birth. That time the baby didn't suckle much lar. We were given the option of either baby rooming with us or baby stays at the nursery but they will bring the baby to us whenever he/she is hungry.

Hi Neat, Thanks a lot, good info. Strange to see most of the private hospitals in KL and Selangor not certified baby friendly, I wonder what's the reason......
